Manifestationer under The First Great Awakening:
Jag tänkte börja med att prata om Jonathan Edwards som var en utav huvudpersonerna i väckelsen som kallades för “the first great awekening”.

Jonathan Edwards beskriver själv väckelsen under åren 1740-1742 såhär: “It was a very frequent thing to see a house full of outcries, faintings, convulsions, and such like, both with distress, and also with admiration and joy”

Hon berättade även om hur hon “earnestly she shared with them her sense of God’s wonderful grace towards her in redeeming her from hell.” under nästa hymn så försökte hon “leaped spontaneously from her chair, feeling as if she were ascending to Heaven.” under nästa hymn så var hon på golvet och kunde inte röra sig och de fick ta henne till beds.

Sarah beskrev det som ‘the sweetest night I ever had in my life,’. Jonathan själv beskrev sin fru såhär: “Now if such things are enthusiasm, and the fruits of a distempered brain, let my brain be evermore possessed of that happy distemper! If this be distraction, I pray God that the world of mankind may be all seized with this benign, meek, beneficent, beatifical, glorious distraction!”

Dem skrev: “There were some instances of persons lying in a sort of trance, remaining for perhaps a whole twenty-four hours motionless…but in the meantime under strong imaginations, as though they went to Heaven, and had there a vision of glorious and delightful objects. But when the people were raised to this height, Satan took the advantage …a great deal of caution and pains were found necessary to keep the people, many of them, from running wild”. Referens: Jonathan Edwards, “Personal Narrative,” Jonathan Edwards: Letters and Personal Writings, edited by George S. Claghorn (New Haven: Yale, 1998), Sida 117.

Ordet entusiasm kom till under 1600-talet och kommer ifrån det grekiska ordet “theos”, vilket betyder “to be filled with or inspired by God.”.

Jonathan beskrev det såhär: “Their joyful surprise has caused their hearts as it were to leap, so that they have been ready to break forth into laughter, tearing often at the same time issuing like a flood, and intermingling a loud weeping.” – Referens: boken “Edwards, Jonathan Edwards on Revival.”

Chauncy sa att många “shew this Joy by clapping of Hands, by jumping up and down, by Congratulations in the Way of Kissing, by breaking out into hearty loud Laughter.” Men han såg även att många manifesterade sig på detta vis – “swoonings, and out-cries, and Screamings, so like to these same Effects under Terror, that it han’t been known, whether persons were in Joy or Sorrow.”

I ett hem-möte så såg Chauncy 2 par kvinnor som föll in i en trans samtidigt han beskriver det såhär: “depriv’d of their bodily Strength; but yet, were by Turns able to speak, which they did….”Nästa kväll så hände detta kvinnan, hon:“fell down unable to walk…(and) continued in a Sort of Extasie, either lying as though in a Sleep, or uttering extatic Expressions of Joy, of the Love of Christ, and of Love to Him; of Concern for the Souls of Sinners, and the like.” Referens: Charles Chauncy, Seasonable Thoughts on the State of Religion in New England (Boston, 1743; reprint edition Hicksville, NY: Regina Press, 1975), sida – 126-129.

Bibeln själv säger i Luke 11:11 – “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?”, om du frågar Fadern om den Helige Anden så kommer han inte ge dig en orm. Väckelse helande evangelisten AA Allen sa såhär: “If you are walking with Jesus, in the Spirit, you need not fear going too far. No believer has gone as far as God wants him to go.” Referens – A.A. Allen, The Price of God’s Miracle Working Power (1950).

Second Great Awekning och dess manifestationer:
Charles Finney I “the secend great Awekening” var en väckelse predikant och vi kan se hur han berättar om sitt dop i den helige Anden: “like a wave of electricity, going through and through me,” precis därefter så berättar Charles att en väldigt stel och seriös äldstepräst “fell into a most spasmodic laughter. It seemed as if it was impossible for him to keep from laughing from the very bottom of his heart.” In every age of the Church, cases have occurred in which persons have had such clear manifestations of Divine truth as to prostrate their physical strength entirely…. The veil seems to be removed from the mind, and the truth is seen much as we suppose it to be when the spirit is disembodied. No wonder this should overpower the body.” Referens: Francis MacNutt, The Power to Heal (Notre Dame, IN: Ave Maria Press, 1977), sida 200.

De galna metodisterna:
Detta är hur John Wesley och Whitefileds möten beskrivs av en nyfrälst Metodist 1807: “I thought they were distracted, such fools I’d never seen. They’d stamp and clap and tremble, and wail and cry and scream.” ett möte år 1776 beskrivs såhär: “the assembly appeared to be all in confusion, and must seem to one at a little distance more like a drunken rabble than the worshippers of God.” Referens – “Shouting Methodists” (Jesus Army/Jesus Fellowship Church), http://www.jesus.org.uk/ja/mag_revivalfires_methodists.shtml
Han beskrev sina möten själv såhär: “many fell under the mighty power of God, like dead men.” Referens – Ann Taves, Fits, Trances, and Visions (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1999), sida 92-93.
Limerick in 1762—“Many more were brought to the birth. All were in floods of tears, cried, prayed, roared aloud, all of them lying on the ground.”
Newcastle in 1772—“An eminent backslider came into my mind, and I broke off abruptly… ‘Is James Watson here? If he be, shew thy power.’ Down dropped James Watson like a stone.”
Coleford in 1784—“When I began to pray, the flame broke out. Many cried aloud, many sank to the ground, many trembled exceedingly.”
Alla manifestationer som så många idag attackerar och säger att de kommer ifrån Azusa väckelsen eller Toronto väckelsen ser vi både inom presbyteriena, baptisterna, metodisterna, the first och the sencond awekning.
Helig Berusning:

May Christ be now the Bread we eat,
Be simple Faith our potion sweet:
Let our intoxication be

The Spirit’s calm sobriety

Referens: Aurelius Prudentius, The Hymns of Prudentius, translated by R. Martin Pope

En annan löd såhär:

And Speaking Waters touched my lips From the Lord’s Spring, plenteously.
And I drank and was intoxicated With the Living Water that does not die.
But my intoxication caused no heedlessness:
Rather, I abandoned selfhood, And turned towards the Most High, my God, And was enriched by His gift

John of Ruysbroeck (1294–1381) beskriver hur en upplevelse med den helige Anden kan upplevas: “The spiritual inebriation leads to many and unaccustomed actions. Some, in the abundance of happiness, break out into canticles and sing God’s praises. Others shed tears of joy. Some feel an eager longing for movement in their limbs, they cannot remain still; they must run, leap, stamp their feet, clap their hands vigorously. Others show their delight by loud cries. Others, again, find all their faculties taken possession of to such an extent that they stand silent, and as it were, melting with love.”

Catherine of Siena en katolsk dam som levde på 1300-talet, pratar väldigt mycket om Guds heliga berusning – “I sense my soul once again becoming drunk! Thanks be to God!” Catherine skriver: O priceless Love! You showed Your inflamed desire when You ran like a blind and drunk man to the opprobrium of the cross. A blind man can’t see, and neither can a drunk man when he is fast drunk. And thus He [Christ] almost like someone dead, blind, and drunk, lost Himself for our salvation!

Cathereine skrev också detta: “O unutterable Love…even though You saw all the evils that all Your creatures would commit against Your infinite goodness, You acted as if You did not see and set Your eye only on the beauty of Your creature, with whom You fell in love, like one drunk and crazy with love. And in love You drew us out of Yourself giving us being.” – Referens: Murray, “Drinking in the Word: Dominicans and the New Wine of the Gospel.”

Heligt Skratt:
Vi ser även hur folk genom kyrkans historia har haft ett heligt skratt vi ser det inte bara i metodistkyrkan, den karismatiska kyrkan eller the first and second great awekning. Men vi ser även hur det heliga skrattet har manifesterats i baptistkyrkan, det var engång en skottisk baptistpastor som hette Oswald Chambers år 1907 skrev han detta: “we had a blessed time. I was called down by the teachers to pray and anoint a lady who wanted healing, and as we were doing it God came so near that upon my word we were laughing as well as praying! How utterly stilted we are in our approach to God. Oh that we lived more up to the light of all our glorious privileges.” Referens – Gertrude Chambers, Oswald Chambers: His Life and Work (London: Simpkin Marshall, Ltd., 1947), sida 103.

Den tyska munken Meister Eckhart beskrev skratt och glädje som något som fanns djupt inom treenigheten, han beskrev det såhär: “…the Father laughs at the Son and the Son at the Father, and the laughing brings forth pleasure, and the pleasure brings forth joy, and the joy brings forth love.” Referens – Paul Murray, “Drinking in the Word: Dominicans and the New Wine of the Gospel,”

“Now I say that worship is subject to degrees of perfection and intensity. There have been those who worshiped God to the place where they were in ecstasies of worship. I once saw a man kneel at an altar, taking Communion. Suddenly he broke into holy laughter. This man laughed until he wrapped his arms around himself as if he was afraid he would bust just out of sheer delight in the presence of Almighty God…. So worship is capable of running from the very simple to the most intense and sublime.” Refrens – A.W. Tozer, Worship: The Missing Jewel (Camp Hill, PA: Christian Publications, 1992), sida 20-21.

“Joy is the serious business of heaven” – C.S Lewis.

2 cor 5:17

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Behold, all things are become new – “The man is not only mended, but he is new made; he is a new creature, καινη κτισις, a new creation, a little world in himself; formerly, all was in chaotic disorder; now, there is a new creation, which God himself owns as his workmanship, and which he can look on and pronounce very good. The conversion of a man from idolatry and wickedness was among the Jews denominated a new creation. He who converts a man to the true religion is the same, says R. Eliezer, as if he had created him.” – Adam Clarke (Methodist theoligan).

The anointing in effortless union with God.

Because of what Jesus Christ and His finished work on the Cross, all who believe in Him are sons. Our sonship is not based on our pushing, striving, fasting or works. Sonship is not about “family status”. Or trying to become higher or more “powerful” than someone else, but it is simply beliveing in Jesus Christ and knowing what he says about us.

We are sons who are dripping with the oil of bliss.
We are the candlesticks flowing with the full measure of the seven spiritsof God, we are the candlesticks flowing with the full measure of this sevenfold torrent of golden oil.

Zechariah 4:6Amplified Bible (AMP)

6 Then he said to me, “This [continuous supply of oil] is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel [prince of Judah], saying, ‘Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit [of whom the oil is a symbol],’ says the Lord of hosts.

The prophet Zechariah wondered at the two olive trees and teh lampstand which he saw in the vision. When Zechariah asked teh angel to interpret the meaning of the two olive trees and the candelstick, the angel replied with a word to the governor Zerubbabel saying, “not by might, nor by power but by my Spirit.” So the answer to Zechariah’s question as to the olive trees and their meanings were that they were anointings of the Spirit of God: by my spirit.

The lord then brings more clarity in:

Zechariah 4:12-14Amplified Bible (AMP)

12 And a second time I said to him, “What are these two olive branches which are beside the two golden pipes by which the golden oil is emptied?” 13 And he answered me, “Do you not know what these are?” And I said, “No, my lord.” 14 Then he said, “These are the two [a]sons of fresh oil [Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the prince of Judah] who are standing by the Lord of the whole earth [as His anointed ones].”

We see these two anointed ones mentioned again in the Book of Revelation – the two end time witnesses who prophesy in sackcloth for 1,260 days.

Revelation 11:4Amplified Bible (AMP)

4 These [witnesses] are the two olive trees and the two lampstands which stand before the Lord of the earth.

John sees in the vision that these two “witnesses” are endowed with great power.

Revelation 11:5-6Amplified Bible (AMP)

5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire comes out of their mouth and devours their enemies; so if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this way. 6 These [two witnesses] have the power [from God] to shut up the sky, so that no rain will fall during the days of their prophesying [regarding judgment and salvation]; and they have power over the waters (seas, rivers) to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every [kind of] plague, as often as they wish.

These sons of oil have infinite power flowing through their pipes. The olive tree – the source of the anointing oil – is directly feeding them. The addition of the bowl to the candlestick is Christ Himself. He is the reservoir and channel to our ceaseless supply of oil. This oil causes us to burn a perpetual light. God’s full sevenfold river flows continually through us.

Zechariah is talking about two men – Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel, the prince of Judah. These two were symbolic of things to come. (Zech 4:14 amp).

Zerubbabel was a civil ruler who, togheter with the priest Joshua, was leading the Israelites back from their long Babylonian captivity. He was in charge of rebuilding the temple of the Lord.

BOTH of these men represent Christ – our High Priest and builder of His church. Likewise, they represent two mantles on us as believers. One is a king. Another is a priest.

1 Peter 2:9New International Version (NIV)

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Jesus Christ is now our eternal high priest. The role of the high preist is to make atonement for the sin of the people. Christ ALONE could do this. Christ alone could suffer. Christ alone could redeem. Woe to that intercessor who thinks she assists Christ in bearing the burdens of the world! There is no assistance to His cross. On the road of His passion, he said, “weep not for me.”(Luke 23:28) You are not even to feel sorry for His sufferings. You are called to rejoice and feast on them.

If we are now ordained as priests, sharng in the priestly office of Christ – what is left for us to accomplish? If the work is finished and done, who are we to hold such a title as priest?

Our job is not to repeat what Jesus Christ has done. Rather it is to simply rejoice in what he has done! As John Piper says “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”.

As a people who long to walk and operatein the ful charisma of God’s Spirit – let us never forget the center, source and focus of His presence and power.

It flows freely from Him and YOU are now In Him and He is In you, Christ In you, the hope of glory.

The slain Lamb is the origin and destination of all that God is. His golden oil flows generously and without reserve to all who ish to drink. It comes from Him, burns effortlessly through us, and shines right back to Him. He alone is the starting point, the cneter and the finish mark. The Alpha and Omega in the salvation of men. There is no longer a need to strive to get filled with the Holy Spirit, just trust in the finished work of the Cross and what he has done for you, what he says about you, how you now are full of anointing, you are now one with the anointing, in oness with the source to the anointing, he is now flowing through you with streams of living water. And the connector is trust, it is faith, in a effortless way. Just let this truth sink in and become a manifestation in yourlife. You are so loved, so full of glory! You got the God of the universe living inside of you, trust me you are a lot bigger on the inside then on the outside. So much glory on you!

Religion Sucks.

The two things the religious spirit hates the most is radical worship and signs and wonders, the two things the church have cut down on is radical worship and signs and wonders. The religious spirit hates everything that reveals Gods goodness, the religious spirit wants you to feel that you need to work hard to see Gods goodness manifest. But Jesus wants you to rest in His finished work! 🙂

God behind it all.

The fact that you are going after God, is because God is going after you. The scandalous revelation of God’s lavish grace, is that God was behind it all. He is the one that have changed you and saved you single-handedly. It is all about Jesus.

Bliss

Only to sit and think of God, Oh what a joy it is! To think the thought, to breathe the name, Earth has no higher bliss. – Frederick W. Faber

The gospel of Grace

The good news of The gospel of Gods lavish grace, is so effortless and so simple it takes an theologian to complicate it.

Idol of the will

So today in the church we have a religous idol, of our own will-power. R.T. Kendell tells us in his book “once saved, always saved” that he use to believe in a lie that was “If I were to make it up to heaven, it would be up to me. “God has done all He can for you, now it is up to you”.

The flavor of faith is rest. Not willpower. This was a CORE, lifelong message of Martin Luther. His book Bondage of the Will was a cornerstone for the Reformation. All the major Reformers – Calvin, Zwingli, etc. Agreed with him in this battle against the idol of the will.

You see the human will is one of the biggest idols of the church. Will power fuels religion.

All the Israelites exercised an independent will apart from God and they died out in the desert. Yes, you have a human will. But it is not “free” apart from JESUS CHRIST. You cannot even force yourself to be a son of God. When you were born-again, you were born a son. You didn’t chose Him, He chose you, In the same way, you don’t climb yourself into kingdom miracles or mystical experiences. It’s all a gift of grace showered on us. Because he is a God daddy!

Children of God are those, “Who are born, not of the blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:13, DRB).

OF HIS OWN WILL he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of His creatures (Jas. 1:18 ESV).

If you really want to get technical about it, you were not even saved because of your “decision for Christ” but because of His “decision for you.” You were in His heart and imagination from before the world was created. He is the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world.

Ephesians 1:3-6,9 King James Version (KJV)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved…… Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Thank goodness salvation had nothing to do with us otherwise we’d all be screwed.
“Making known to us the mystery (secret) of His will (of His plan, of His purpose). [And it is this:] In accordance with His good pleasure (His merciful intention) which He had previously purposed and set forth in Him, [He planned] for the maturity of the times and the climax of the ages to unify all things and head them up and consummate them in Christ, [both] things in heaven and things on the earth. (Ephesians 1:9-10 AMP)

JB Phillips translation! “For God had allowed us to know the secret of his plan, and it is this: he purposes in his sovereign will that all human history shall be consummated in Christ, that everything that exists in Heaven or earth shall find its perfection and fulfillment in him.”

Don’t see so much of my will there, more about him….It’s all about His predetermination, His will and His accomplishment. If the so-called “free” will even exists, who would want it? What are you going to choose apart from God? You have been grafted completely into His will. Now, His Spirit owns and possesses you. Paul called himself a doulos – a slave – in fact, he was a slave to love. He was ruled and overmastered by the love of God.

AS a new creation Norman Grubb says “God changes our “want”, and the will follows spontaneously. Once God has captured our wills by drawing us back to Himself through Christ, then it is He in us who “wills and does of His good pleasure.” – Norman Grubb, “Romans 7.” (Sermon recording).

It would be a fearful thing to trust in our own efforts. Charles Spurgeon says:

“….. And I will go as far as Martin Luther, in that strong assertion of his, where he says, “If any man doth ascribe of salvation, even the very least, to the free will of man, he knoweth nothing of grace, and he hath not learnt Jesus Christ aright.” It may seem a harsh sentiment; but he who in his soul believes that man does of his own free will turn to God, cannot have been taught of God, for that is one of the first principles taught us when God begins with us, that we have neither will nor power, but that He gives both; that He is “Alpha and Omega” in the salvation of men.”- Charles Spurgeon, “Free Will a Slave.” (1855 Sermon).

Charles Spurgeon also tells us how this works in a beautiful way!

“Well can I remember the manner in which I learned the doctrines of grace in a single instant. Born, as all of us are by nature, an Arminian, I still believed the old things I had heard continually from the pulpit, and did not see the grace of God. When I was coming to Christ, I thought I was doing it all myself, and though I sought the Lord earnestly, I had no idea the Lord was seeking me. I do not think the young convert is at first aware of this. I can recall the very day and hour when first I received those truths in my own soul-when they were, as John Bunyan says, burnt into my heart as with a hot iron, and I can recollect how I felt that I had grown on a sudden from a babe into a man-that I had made progress in Scriptural knowledge, through having found, once for all, the clue to the truth of God. One week-night, when I was sitting in the house of God, I was not thinking much about the preacher’s sermon, for I did not believe it. The thought struck me, How did you come to be a Christian? I sought the Lord. But how did you come to seek the Lord? The truth flashed across my mind in a moment- I should not have sought Him unless there had been some previous influence in my mind to make me seek Him. I prayed, thought I, but then I asked myself, How came I to pray? I was induced to pray by reading the Scriptures. How came I to read the Scriptures? I did read them, but what led me to do so? Then, in a moment, I saw that God was at the bottom of it all, and that He was the Author of my faith, and so the whole doctrine of grace opened up to me, and from that doctrine I have not departed to this day, and I desire to make this my constant confession, “I ascribe my change wholly to God.” – “Spurgeon – a defense of Calvinism”.

For an example…. When I was a kid I loved going to the candy shop and buy sweets…. Now I did feel like I was the one buying loads of candy…. But, who was the one driving me to the sweet shop? My sweet mom…..who was the one paying for my sweets? My mom… Who was the one working so we could afford sweets? My mom…. Who was the one allowing how much sugar intake I could have every weekend? My mom….. So in our christian walk, it can sometimes feel like it is us who do things, but behind the scenes our amazing beloved Father is the one in control, it is His goodness that leads us to repentance!

So what now? Do you say Max that I have no free-will? No. You do have a human-will, my question to you is, do you really have a free will outside of Christ? I would say no.

Your will now, is Christ will. Charles Spurgeon writes: “This gracious system of representation and substitution, which moved Justin Martyr to cry out, “O blessed change, O sweet permutation this, I say, is the very groundwork of the gospel of our salvation, and is to be received with strong faith and rapturous joy. In every place the saints are perfectly one with Jesus.” – Spurgeon, “Bands of Love or Union to Christ.”

We are perfectly one with Christ, we have the mind of Christ, we are in perfect union, in oness with Christ himself, Paul even says this in a more extreme way in Gal 2:20 ” I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.”

Haha we have been crucified with Christ it is no longer I who live, but Christ that lives in me! We are Possessed by Christ Alone and we are moving and walking in Him and he is moving and walking in us, through us, on upon us. We are moving and living in the realms of grace and in the spirit. We are sons of obedience and are living in His will.

The new heart

As Christians we have been given a new heart by Jesus Christ, he has done away with that old sinful old heart. And given us a new heart!

Ezekiel 36:26Amplified Bible (AMP) –

A new heart will I give you and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

This new heart is a new God-willed heart, because it is a God-filled heart:

Ephesians 3:19Amplified Bible (AMP) –

[That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] [c]unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and [d]become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!

Because of this our former heart is eclipsed to absolutely nothing more than a memory. In fact, the rotten old heart is only called upon as a cause for rejoicing that it has disappeared. Like an empty prison cell, it is only remembered by the former resident as a reminder of how fantastic freedom from that cell really is.

The old heart can be defined as “everything about us that was contrary to the nature of God.” This old heart, that could never please God, has been cut away by Christ Himself.

Colossians 2:11Amplified Bible (AMP) –

In Him also you were circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, but in a [spiritual] circumcision [performed by] Christ by stripping off the body of the flesh (the whole corrupt, carnal nature with its passions and lusts).

True circumcision is of the heart, we have been heart – circumcised!

Romans 2:17; Romans 2:28-29 (Weymouth New Testament) –

For the true Jew is not the man who is simply a Jew outwardly, and true circumcision is not that which is outward and bodily. But the true Jew is one inwardly, and true circumcision is heart-circumcision–not literal, but spiritual; and such people receive praise not from men, but from God

The lord is not trying to fix your old heart, he has removed it! Amazingly, He does not stop there but places inside of each believer a new heart!

Ezekiel 36:36 – Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the bible –

I will change the whole of your infected nature; and give you new appetites, new passions……

I will entirely remove this heart: it is opposite to that which I have promised you; you cannot have the new heart and the old heart at the same time.

You cannot have the old and new at the same time; they are opposite of each other and have contrary desires.

But a true Christian has only a heart that is by nature completely new. This heart has new passions and emotions. These are the emotions of the Spirit and the fruits of the Spirit.

The new heart frolics in teh presence of God; for it has been made the dwelling place of the Eternal! The new heart is a holy-heart, with only holy thoughts and desires.

There is nothing evil in the heart of the believer! Only Heaven’s goodness can dwell within it.

Do not try to save yourself.

If you think about it, God’s value of heaven and yours are very different things. His salvation, when he set a price upon it, was to be brought to men only through the death of his Son. But you think that your good works can win the heaven which Jesus Christ, the Son of God, procured at the cost of his own blood! Do you dare to put your miserable life in comparison with the life of God’s obedient Son, who gave himself even to death? Does it not strike you that you are insulting God? If there is a way to heaven by works, why did he put his dear Son to all that pain and grief? Why the scenes of Gethsemane? Why the tragedy on Golgotha, when the thing could be done so easily another way? You insult the wisdom of God and the love of God. – C. H. SPURGEON in his book “Advise for seekers”.
